One of the many dangers that technology imposes on teenagers and adults in this day and age is the strong impulse to always use cellphones and unfortunately get distracted. This behavior is derived from those who overestimate their ability to multitask so much that it would not cause them as the driver to be in a car accident. Although the time spent on devices is easy to overlook, technology consumes hours of so many people’s days and has become one of the biggest distractions of our time.
According to statistics provided by an injury law firm, “texting while driving is 6x more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk”. This startling information brings to light how much power our devices have over us. While many agree that texting while driving is unsafe, there are many other factors such as listening to music and using a GPS while driving that diverts a drivers attention from the road to their cellphones. Due to this, a common action made by many is to text while driving, resulting in accidents all over the world. As responsible citizens, we must ask ourselves if the price of technology is worth the risk of losing innocent lives. Through the use of new technology, humans are able to communicate easily with others near or far through the use of texting and calling. While useful when used at appropriate times, there are those who make the simple mistake of multitasking as they drive. A consultant named Stacey Hanke |
explicitly stated how one is unable to drive safely while performing a task on our phone because our mind has boundaries to what it can do at one time. Although technology has proven useful for travel, such as the GPS, it still allows for distraction of drivers. In a statistic provided by The Zebra, “4,637 people died in car crashes in 2018 due to cell phone use and electronic device use”. The neglect for attention on the road has led to the death of many, including those who were innocent.
As a society, a change must be made in which we take a stand to have more self-control and deny technology the right to consume our lives. The consequences of failure to follow through with this is clear, reckless driving can take lives and technology is playing a role. Within seconds, lives can be greatly affected through the misuse of our devices. Technology is just as guilty as those who are conducting it. Nicole Rossi |
